The Sigma 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS Contemporary is a compact large-aperture telephoto zoom designed for Sony E-mount APS-C mirrorless cameras. Covering a useful 75-180mm equivalent focal range, it combines a constant F2.8 aperture with powerful optical stabilisation, fast autofocus and impressive close-focusing performance.
Ideal for portraits, wildlife, sports, events and detail photography, the 50-120mm F2.8 delivers the reach and subject separation expected from a telephoto zoom while keeping size and weight remarkably low for easier handheld shooting and travel.
The 50-120mm zoom range provides an approximately 75-180mm equivalent field of view on Sony APS-C cameras. This makes it particularly well suited to portraits, candid photography, events and more distant subjects where additional reach is required.
At the longer end, the telephoto perspective provides attractive compression and helps isolate subjects against softly rendered backgrounds, while the constant F2.8 maximum aperture offers excellent creative control throughout the entire zoom range.
Despite combining a constant F2.8 aperture with a substantial telephoto range, the Sony E-mount version measures just 99mm long and weighs approximately 390g.
Its compact dimensions make it an excellent partner for smaller Sony APS-C bodies, particularly for photographers who want telephoto capability without carrying a much larger conventional F2.8 zoom.
Sigma’s HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) provides fast and responsive autofocus for both stills and video, helping the lens keep up with moving subjects.
Built-in OS (Optical Stabilisation) uses Sigma’s OS2 algorithm to provide up to 6.5 stops of stabilisation at the wide end and 4.5 stops at the telephoto end, helping reduce the effects of camera shake when shooting handheld.
The optical design incorporates 18 elements in 13 groups, including one FLD, three SLD and four aspherical elements. These specialised elements help control optical aberrations and maintain strong contrast and image quality throughout the zoom range.
The lens also provides useful close-focusing performance, with a minimum focusing distance of 23cm at 50mm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3, allowing detailed close-up images alongside more traditional telephoto photography.
The optical design has been developed to minimise focus breathing, helping reduce unwanted changes in angle of view as focus is adjusted during video recording.
Sony E-mount users also benefit from a dedicated iris ring, providing direct control over aperture when shooting with compatible cameras. A dust- and splash-resistant structure and water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element provide additional protection when working outdoors.
